Dervish dancing, Mevlana Museum, Konya, Turkey
Dervish are members of the Islamic Mevlevi order, founded in the 13th century by the Persian poet Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī, today simply known as Rumi. Through the physical exertion of the whirling dance and the recitation of devotional Islamic prayer the dervishes practice the dhikr, a remembering of Allah. This practice, though not intended as entertainment, has become a tourist attraction in Turkey, as seen here at the Mevlana Museum in Konya.
